MALADYPE CELEBRATES ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY

This year marks the 25th anniversary of one of the most influential theatre companies in Hungary and internationally: Maladype Theatre. Founded in the 2000/2001 season, it quickly gained international recognition and became a sought-after avant-garde creative community, whose spirit and artistic expressions embody a vision that cannot be pigeonholed into any theatrical canon. Its multifaceted creative activity is characterized by intellectual freedom, experimentation and risk-taking. The performances created under the leadership of artistic director Zoltán Balázs persistently explore the special qualities of theatre. These multidisciplinary productions, which have been met with serious acclaim and have won significant professional and public awards, have made Maladype one of the most original and high-quality companies in the Hungarian and international art scene.

Maladype (which means "encounters" in the Lovari language) and its very first premiere at the Roma Parliament took the theatre world by storm on 13 November 2000. Zoltán Balázs's complex theatrical adaptation of Ionesco’s Jack, or the submission generated an extraordinary interplay between artists from different cultures. Theatre critic István Sándor L. reported on the Gypsy-Hungarian creators of the performance presented in an extraordinary venue and concept: "Despite the fact that the actors come from many different backgrounds, they give the impression of a well-established company. This is the secret of secrets: how can such a significant theatre be born on the periphery, almost out of nothing?" The production, based on the character of Jack, who embodies Roma identity, drew attention to the fact that understanding and nurturing the culture of minorities is an essential cornerstone of European thinking, and that even the smallest compromise can lead to the elimination of our individuality. The performance had a huge success at the National Theatre Meeting of Pécs and the Sarajevo Winter Festival as well.

With a history spanning two and a half decades, Maladype has become one of Hungary's leading theatre and cultural communities, working, in addition to its permanent members, with artists such as Mária Ambrus, Mari Benedek, Ilona Béres, Gyöngyi Blasek, Claudio Collova, Gábor Gábriel Farkas, Ferenc Fehér, Judit Gombár, Judit Góczán, Szabolcs Hajdu, Juli Horányi, Ivica Buljan, László Kéringer, Kornél Mogyoró, Anikó Németh, Pino di Buduo, László Keszég, Adrián Kovács, Károly Kuna, Erzsébet Kútvölgyi, Andrea Ladányi, István Orosz, Andrea Petrik, László Sáry, István Szabó K., András Szőllősi, Kátya Tompos, Júlia Ungár, Mária Varga, Éva Vándor, Vlad Troickij, Mari Törőcsik and Sándor Zsótér.

Throughout the years, Maladype has remained a company capable of constantly reinventing itself, gaining new insights by challenging itself in new contexts and regarding change as a natural process in theatre-making. Zoltán Balázs and his creative partners consciously seek out the unexpected possibilities offered by theatrical and non-theatrical spaces, unusual acting choices, direct audience reactions, and unique situations where the causal systems of our everyday lives no longer function and where new relationships and new "structures" emerge. The company's distinctive theatrical language and way of thinking is based primarily on concentrated research, intensive presence, and continuous communication with the audience.

True to its name, Maladype is a place for encounters where the audience can get to know a wide variety of versatile, innovative and unique works. Inspired by different cultural and theatrical traditions, their performances elevate the text to the same level as music, movement, and visuals, providing viewers with a complex experience that appeals to the intellect, emotions, and senses alike. The company successfully implements its unique theatrical ideas through domestic and international collaborations in a variety of genres and styles. Their signature open theatre model includes methodological workshops, community-building "events," theatre-in-education and initiation programs, as well as cultural and educational series. Since its inception, the company, which is unique in its organizational and artistic-aesthetic approach, has been carrying out works of public utility and implementing programs that promote social integration, but it also attaches great importance to the professional development of future generations and knowledge-based talent management.

In the anniversary season, Zoltán Balázs will stage the Hungarian premiere of Can Themba's classic The Suit. The composer of the contemporary jazz opera, which will premiere on 26 June 2026, is Adrián Kovács. This new musical work, which combines elements of jazz with classical opera traditions, is based on an adaptation and libretto of a short story by one of the most famous South African authors in world literature. It is a collaboration between Maladype, METTRIN, the Louis Armstrong International Jazz Festival, and African and European partners. Following in the footsteps of Peter Brook, who first staged Themba's influential work in Europe in 2004, director Zoltán Balázs is planning an associative performance that uses the power of humour and absurdity to defend the order of the irrational universe. The work's relevance is ensured by the widespread need for the understanding and processing of the experience of domestic violence.

On the occasion of its quarter-century anniversary, the ensemble plans to publish a Hungarian-English volume entitled MALADYPE +15ÉV/YEARS, which, as a continuation of the MALADYPE 10ÉV/YEARS album, presents the company's recent development from 2011 to 2026. The significance of this groundbreaking undertaking is the creation of a series of books discussing the professional evolution of Maladype and its artistic and educational activities. The second volume, created in the spirit of “encounters”, not only introduces the company’s performances, events, and creators, but also provides an overview of its unique operation across different eras, its survival strategy, and its wide-ranging cultural diplomacy activities.

The Judit Gombár Foundation, established by Maladype Theatre PBO, will also begin operating in the company's 25th season. Its main goal is to pay tribute to the unparalleled human and creative greatness of Judit Gombár, leading set and costume designer of Zoltán Balázs’s and Maladype’s productions. The award created by the foundation will be presented every year on September 13, the birthday of the epoch-making artist, in a festive ceremony. The "Judit Gombár Multidisciplinary Award" aims to recognize artists of unique quality whose vision and innovative spirit sets new standards for the future of theatre and the performing arts, in a manner befitting the brilliant mind and universal talent of the Jászai Mari Award-winning designer and university professor Judit Gombár. The winner of the annual award will be decided by a curatorial board appointed by the foundation, allowing the public to get to know the pioneers of the most interesting trends in contemporary artistic thinking.

With its series of unique theatrical events, Maladype aims to ensure artistic continuity on domestic and foreign stages, as well as to develop its cultural relations with international associates and festivals. For Zoltán Balázs's company, it remains a priority to maintain and distribute its repertoire of Hungarian and international co-productions on a global level.
